GRAHAM CALDERWOOD
REGULARLY dealt with cases in Police Stations and Courts but also PROSECUTED CASES COMBINING recent, long “hands on” experience of the process so USEFUL FOR A COMMISSIONER
For whichever side does a “proper job” and will for DEVON & CORNWALL
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE THAT MATTERS
POLICE AND CRIME COMMISSIONER FOR DEVON & CORNWALL ; an EXCITING NEW POSITION
Commissioners replace remote unapproachable and unaccountable Police Authorities with Councillors elected for many other reasons and then parachuted onto to the Authority by winning parties or groups
NOW ELECTORS WILL ELECT
Many other candidates or their supporting parties are really against this new Position
I GENUINELY SUPPORT THIS NEW EXCITING POSITION
It should be ABSOLUTELY NON POLITICAL
I will regularly CONSULT the public deserving of a say in the way we are policed
Cuts were inevitable but a “new Broom” with experience can sweep through procedures; get more efficiency and less bureaucracy
Court sittings are reducing; workloads falling; retiring magistrates remain unreplaced. I would check we have the right balance in using restorative justice, cautions and fixed penalties which must not be soft options to help statistics
With crime increasing I would want your views
Surveys show dissatisfaction with lenient outcomes
DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE
Cause of so much crime and misery
I would want the former system restored. For less serious cases attendance at drug or alcohol agencies would lead to cautioning or non-court disposals. BUT this time we should insist on REAL INVOLVEMENT at the Agency. Mere attendance once now insufficient; it needs real ENGAGEMENT
