Election statement:

About Joe Michna:

  • Middlesbrough Councillor for 24 years
  • Manager of Hartlepool Citizens Advice Bureau for 23 years
  • Vegetarian and daily user of local bus services
  • Employment Law & Rights Advocate

If elected, I will seek to set an example, by accepting only £35,000 of the Government recommended £70,000 for this post.

My key aims, objectives and priorities will be:

  • giving the Cleveland Police Force clear and strong leadership
  • challenging and holding to account the Chief Constable
  • being your ‘Voice’ on all crime and policing matters in Cleveland
  • improving and strengthening support for victims of crime and witnesses
  • seeking to achieve ‘ value for money’ in all Police activities and carrying out a comprehensive financial review of all spending and contractual arrangements
  • working and campaigning with others to oppose any further reduction in Police Officer numbers
  • undertaking a ‘green audit’ of all Police Force operations
  • holding Police and Crime Commissioner ‘advice and listening’ surgeries throughout Cleveland
  • conducting monthly ‘Neighbourhood Crime and Security Walkabouts’ with local residents
  • having more ‘bobbies on bikes’ as an effective means of providing local policing
  • in partnership with other agencies, improving the ability of the Police to deal with ‘neighbours from hell’
  • recognising the importance of confronting and challenging organised crime groups in Cleveland – no matter how large or small these groups may be
  • in an era of the ‘globalisation of crime’, ensure that the Cleveland Police Force works effectively with other UK and international criminal enforcement agencies
  • setting up a special team headed by the Police Commissioner, to seek to reduce levels of sickness absence in the Force through enhanced support and improved sickness management procedures.
