Whilst the new Police and Crime Commissioner post is new and much learning is required, it is clear that the elected candidate must have competencies at a very senior level, and ideally have the vision for the community and passion for people, particularly victims, to carry the responsibility successfully.
Having never been a career politician I am refreshingly free of the culture and strait-jacket of power politics. And having never been in any police force I am free of any problem about seeing the wood for the trees.
I have worked most of my life in businesses – half of it for large corporations, including 10 years at director level in a very large multi-national, and the latter half working as a consultant and mentor for SMEs, instructing them in professional management, thus enabling them to survive and prosper. I have been, for many years, active in church life in our local community, working to mend lives and to bring hope and encouragement.
So, I bring a wealth of relevant skills and more than 40 years experience in the private sector; managing large budgets, thinking strategically, managing a large team across Europe, negotiating, and demonstrating original thought.
Northumbria Police is a large force publishing strong headline performance figures. The job now is to verify, build on what is good, achieve improvements in the face of relentless resource limitations, and to ensure the product delivered is close to what the diverse communities in Northumbria want.
As a man of principle and compassion, I am for the victim, keen to see punishments fitting the crime, and against avoidable bureaucracy and political correctness. My passion is about raising quality of life and encouraging aspiration in Northumbria.
