Dear Hertfordshire Resident
My priorities for Policing and Crime in Hertfordshire are to keep overall crime rates low, balance the books to make necessary savings, and work towards improving the relationship between the general public and the Police.
Keeping crime rates low is my first priority, but I will not seek to significantly change approach, as the Police must be allowed to get on with their jobs without political interference. The Neighbourhood Policing Team model works well and should be enhanced. If things start to go off course, I will rapidly engage.
To balance the books, much work needs to be done. The existing Police Authority has failed to plan properly for spending cuts. They have had 2 years to put forward budget plans, but the only plan that has been almost fully worked through is a big outsourcing contract with G4S, which I do not support. As an alternative, collaborative arrangements with Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire could substantially meet necessary savings requirements. All that is needed is senior management engagement, which I would enforce; I am not against outsourcing in principle.
I believe that I am the only candidate who can offer a fresh perspective and I have not already been involved in planning for a G4S outsourcing.
I am not a career politician. I am a working man, with a young family, who became a Borough Councillor to help his community. I have been driven to put my name forward because I believe that without political leaders having the necessary professional experience to sort out complex budgeting issues, local government will be forever wasting your money.
