The Police and Crime Commissioner post is new, so there is much learning to be done.
It requires a proven understanding of complicated organisations and an ability to work in co-operation and consensus with a multitude of people, organisations and agencies.
Durham Constabulary will spend £116M this year. There is a requirement to motivate, manage and lead in an environment of increasing workload and hugely reduced resources.
This is no easy task but crucially important in ensuring an accountable, trusted police service responding to the wishes of the law abiding people of County Durham and Darlington.
Every candidate must be examined in detail before the electorate vote. The wrong choice will be disastrous.
I, Mike Costello B.Sc. (Hons.), M.A., bring 63 years of life experience with over 45 years in the private, public, charitable and voluntary sectors implementing organisational improvement, managing people and budgets at a very senior level.
I spent 18 years with Durham Constabulary implementing information technology systems to the Constabulary, Magistrates Courts and Crown Prosecution Service. I was a member of the senior officers’ policy group and heavily involved in several inter agency and police force initiatives.
I am well known and, I like to think, a highly effective community activist in Durham City and the Secretary of the Rotary Club of Durham.
I believe that this post, introduced by the ConDem coalition giving legitimacy to individual Police and Crime Commissioners, could potentially compromise the impartiality of, and our trust in, our Police Service.
I am the ONLY candidate who offers TOTAL independence and HUGE relevant experience to the people of County Durham and Darlington.
