I served for 32 years in the army with the Royal Artillery, Commando and Parachute Brigades and Special Forces, which included 6 years in Northern Ireland. For the last 20 years I have worked on the international front-line, in countries in conflict, (Rwanda, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and Somalia) to keep my family, community and our country safe.
Now I want to use that experience and expertise for communities across Wiltshire and Swindon. I will consult widely regarding threats and concerns, and then focus on prevention, prosecution, punishment, restorative justice, reintegration into civil society and victim support. Defeating criminality, like terrorism requires a comprehensive strategy.
Crime concerns vary across Wiltshire & Swindon – in urban areas there are ‘county lines’ and drug issues, whilst rural communities suffer from the theft of expensive agricultural equipment, fly-tipping and hare coursing. Across the entire county, there are speeding and traffic issues, theft, anti-social behaviour, pet theft and domestic abuse. As your Police and Crime Commissioner I will ensure that our police are more visible in our communities.
It would be easy to make hollow promises as to how I will address these issues – what I can promise is to strain every sinew to put more police on the front line. This will require a close look at the police funding formula and how our police are currently organised. I will work closely with the Chief Constable and will also promise to do all that I can to support our police. I believe passionately in the RMA Sandhurst motto ‘Serve to Lead’.
